CHARLIE SARMIENTO

José Carlos «Charlie» Sarmiento was born in Guatemala City on February 17th, 1982, to Guatemalan parents, and descended from northern Italy (Brescia and Venice) by his maternal grandmother. He’s a father of 4 beautiful children: Valeria, Katia, Martin and Anika, all born in Guatemala.

Charlie holds a Master in Business Administration and Marketing from INCAE Business School and a Bachelor of Business Administration and Finance from Universidad Francisco Marroquin.

From 2006 to 2020 he held corporate management positions in multinational companies in the sectors of: consulting, agro-industrial, and food and beverage. Focusing his experience on: incursion of new markets in Latin America and organizational restructuring, mainly.

In 2020, he created Vertikal Sports Capital, where he managed to incubate during the pandemic of COVID-19, the first project in Guatemala that comes to revolutionize the sport industry in Latin America: Vertikal Sport Performance. Additionally, he is the Founder of Zero Sixty, where he markets the most innovative brands in sport through an online platform.

Charlie is passionate about life, and after overcoming getting COVID19, which he called «Boomerang», he created an initiative in conjunction with Roosevelt Hospital in Guatemala to promote plasma donation, PLASMAS VIDA.

In January 2015 he began to train for ultra trail marathons, and by January 2020, he had already completed 14 International Ultra Marathons, which totals more than 1,500 km and more than 75,000 meters of Elevation Gain D+.

Highlights:

  • 2016

    He managed to position himself as the 3rd best Guatemalan in Ultra Trail, according to the ITRA ranking (International Trail Runnning Association).

  • 2017

    He positioned himself as the 5th best Latin American athlete on the Ultra Trail World Tour.

  • 2018

    He represented Guatemala in his first trail run world championship, in Peñagolosa (Valencia, Spain), achieving the position No. 138 in the male branch in the category of 86kms. and an elevation gain of 6,000 meters, finishing in 13 hours.

  • 2019

    He completed his first ultra trail marathon of 161km and 6,000 meters of elevation gain. He completed the oldest ultra-distance race in the United States, Western States Endurance Run, finishing in 26 hours 58 minutes.

    2019

He has demanded himself at the highest level of international ultra marathons that are part of the most competitive circuit in the world, the Ultra Trail World Tour Series, such as Ultra Trail Mount Fuji 170km, Western States of 161 km, Transgrancanaria of 125km, Lavaredo of 120 km, CCC of 101km, UTMB, among others.

Prior to being an ultra-mountain marathoner, he was selected in the Youth Guatemalan National Baseball Team (shortstop-second base) for more than 7 years. He was also selected in the U17 Guatemalan National Soccer Team (forward), and pre-selected Futsal as the 4th goalkeeper.
